The AI didn't misunderstand you

Prompting isn't magic. It's communication.

People talk about prompting like it's a secret language. Like if you find the right phrase, the model suddenly gets smart.

It isn't magic. It's communication. That's all.

When an answer comes back weak, it usually isn't because the model couldn't do it. It's because something stayed in your head. A detail you thought was obvious. A "why" you never said. A boundary you assumed it would infer.

Humans are great at that. If a friend says "make something nice for dinner," you already know what nice means to them. The model only has the words you typed. Not the picture you had while you typed them.

So it guesses. A statistically reasonable guess. Not the guess you were hoping for.

I want you to hear that without shame. Every new prompt engineer does this, including me when I started. Incomplete communication works on people. It does not work the same way on AI.

The whole skill, the one I actually care about, is removing the need to guess. I call that Prompt Fluency. Same as being able to say a task in Spanish so a native speaker doesn't have to fill in your blanks.

If you say "write a business plan," you just handed it a blank canvas the size of the planet. It will catch something. It won't be the thing you imagined.

If you say what it's for, who it's for, how long, what to avoid, nothing about that is fancy. The clarity is what changed.

That's why "you are an expert in..." is about as far as most courses go. That's a costume. Framing is different. Framing is: here's what I'm actually trying to accomplish. Here's what matters most in this answer.

Once you stop asking the model to read your mind, the output finally starts looking like what you always felt it was capable of.
